Violence Was Never Our Tradition
This piece touches on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Epidemic affecting the United States and Canada. Pre-colonization many Indigenous communities viewed women as sacred and saw them as important members of the community. The majority of perpetrators of violence against Native and Indigenous women are Non-Natives, which makes getting justice for Indigenous women incredibly difficult. The red handprint and red dresses have become international symbols to bring awareness to this issue.
This is not an official collaboration with the National Congress of American Indians.
